Unprepared for war in the Pacific, the Allies tried to hold on as best they could. Posters such as this one tried to put a brave face on what was in truth a desperate and crumbling defence.

The characters portrayed in Allied poster series were sometimes given knicknames by the issuers such as "The Sarge" or "Corporal Rock". They were given more derogatory knicknames by the front-line troops in these desperate times of defeat and surrender."
