LIST: xD&D modules, version 1.0 [Long] xD&D Module List, version 1.0 Released: 29/03/94 ============================= ================== Here is the current version of the xD&D module list. Changes since last posting: - Some reorganisation of module groupings has been done, based on extra information I've had since last time. - The format of each entry has been standardised. - Many module descriptions have been added. All contributions and comments will be heartily welcomed. Email is the best way to send me your notes, as my news reader voraciously devours random posts. As far as possible, I try to include all updates in the next possible posting, but if there are a lot of them, they may only appear in the next but one version. Ideally, I would like submissions in the format show below, because I can then insert contributions directly into the list. But, if you just have a quick comment or correction, or if you're lazy, don't worry too much about formatting things, let me take care of it. X series: -------- Series overview: All of the Expert D&D modules are set in the D&D Known World of Mystara. X4 and X5, along with X10, form the Desert Nomads series. X10 was (according to all the Gazetteers) to take place 200 years in the future. When the Wrath of the Immortals supplement surfaced, it was suggested that with all the events in Wrath, it might be a decent time to pull out X10 and with slight modifications, run it then. This sets it somewhere between AC 1005 and AC 1009 on the timeline. X10 can also be used with either Battlesystem or its D&D equivalent, War Machine. X1: Isle of Dread Setting: D&D Expert, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 3-7 X2: Castle Amber Setting: D&D Expert, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 3-6 X3: Curse of Xanathon Setting: D&D Expert, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 5-7 X4: Master of the Desert Nomads Setting: D&D Expert, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 6-9 X5: Temple of Death Setting: D&D Expert, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 6-10 X6: Quagmire! It features the Blackstick, a fairly powerful artifact that is almost out of charges.] X12: Skarda's Mirror Setting: D&D Expert, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 5-8 X13: Crown of Ancient Glory Setting: D&D Expert/Companion, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 7-10 Written by: Stephen Bourne Description: [Set in Vestland, this modules is a sequel of sorts to X11. It features the same pre-generated characters and makes a couple of references to X11. It introduces an artifact-like crown, the full powers of which are only accessible to a character belonging to the Vestland royal liniage.] C series: -------- Series overview: All of the Companion D&D modules are set on Mystara. CM1-4 and CM6 take place in Norwold, a largely unsettled and unexplored northern wilderness which lies north of what is commonly referred to as the Known World. CM 1 gives much of the background information, and provides a backdrop for events occurring over a two year period. CM7 is an adventure for Elves of Level 8+, and CM8 and CM9 take place within the Known World area. CM5 is a Companion Level solo module, wherein you played an Elf (Level 10, Attack Rank I) included with the module. The levels are high, and it is expected that PCs be concerned with grandiose noble purposes, having left much of the need to rule and acquire wealth behind. The quest for immortality is hanging on the horizon. M1: Into the Maelstrom Setting: D&D Master, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 25-30 M2: Vengeance of Alphaks Setting: D&D Master, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 28-32 M3: Twilight Calling Setting: D&D Master, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 30-35 M4: Five Coins for a Kingdom Setting: D&D Master, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 28-32 M5: Talons of Night Setting: D&D Master, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 20-25 Description: [This was the first product to detail the Isle of Dawn.] IM series: --------- Series overview: The Immortal Level modules don't have much of a level designation, but they are all for fairly new immortals. The setting for all three is outer planes, but the background fluff ties them loosely with Mystara. IM1: Immortal Storm Setting: D&D Immortal, Mystara Characters: Immortal level IM2: Wrath of Olympus Setting: D&D Immortal, Mystara Characters: Immortal level IM3: Best of Intentions Setting: D&D Immortal, Mystara Characters: Immortal level Thunder Rift: ------------ Series overview: These modules, as well as the three huge boxed adventure packs (Goblin's Lair, Dragon's Den, and Haunted Tower) take place in a setting TSR created for the New Dungeons & Dragon Game boxed set, which was released in 1991. The setting is called Thunder Rift and a 32 page accessory (called Thunder Rift) was produced describing this isolated valley. A mini-adventure which allowed characters to travel from it into the world of Mystara was included with the D&D DM Screen. Each of the modules is a mere 16 pages, and include information in a "if the characters do this..." type of format in order to accomodate first time DMs and players without a DM. They also have a full colour mapsheet (scaled for use with figures) and a 16 or 20 die-cut figures. Quest for the Silver Sword Setting: New D&D, Thunder Rift Characters: ? of levels 1-2 Assault on Raven's Ruin Setting: New D&D, Thunder Rift Characters: ? of levels 2-3 Sword and Shield Setting: New D&D, Thunder Rift Characters: 1 level 1 fighter Knight of Newts Setting: New D&D, Thunder Rift Characters: ? of levels 1-2 Rage of the Rakasta Setting: New D&D, Thunder Rift Characters: ? of levels 2-4 In the Phantom's Wake Setting: New D&D, Thunder Rift Characters: ? of levels 4-5 Hollow World: ------------ Series overview: The three HWA modules together form one long interconnected adventure for the Hollow World of Mystara. HWQ1 is a stand alone module which ties the Hollow World setting to the Wrath of the Immortals boxed set. HWA1: Nightwail Setting: D&D Hollow World, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 6-8 HWA2: Nightrage Setting: D&D Hollow World, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 7-9 HWA3: Nightstorm Setting: D&D Hollow World, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 8-10 HWQ1: Milenian Sceptre Setting: D&D Hollow World, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 6-8 Thyatian Empire: --------------- Series overview: The DDA series was formed to further explore the Thyatian Empire in Mystara. The first two modules take place within the City of Thyatis itself, and the next two are adventures in the Grand Duchy of Karameikos (a former Thyatian territory). DDA1: Arena of Thyatis Setting: D&D Thyatian Empire, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 2-3 DDA2: Legions of Thyatis Setting: D&D Thyatian Empire, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 3-4 DDA3: Eye of Traldar Setting: D&D Thyatian Empire, Mystara Characters: ? of levels ? DDA4: Dymrak Dead Setting: D&D Thyatian Empire, Mystara Characters: ? of levels 1-3 Blackmoor: --------- Series overview: Blackmoor was a civilization that existed several thousand years before the Known World. After a spaceship crashed near the Kingdom of Blackmoor, adventurers were sent to defeat this mysterious evil (DA2 and DA3). Subsequently, large amounts of high technology fell into the hands of a magic-rich, feudal society. Magic and technology was merged, more and more destructive devices were invented, and eventually the whole realm went up in a big nuclear (?) explosion. All that remained was the fusion engines that once powered the spaceship. Now located in a cavern far below Glantri City, this device has become an artifact (due to, in part, Immortal tampering) and sends out a radiation that is the source of magic on Mystara. Dave Arneson, co-creator of the D&D game was co-author of these modules. The Blackmoor setting was *the* original D&D campaign world, and the stuff presented by TSR is a reworking of that stuff. Several of the NPCs in the modules were at once time player characters. It's also interesting to note that Blackmoor appears on the world map in the original Greyhawk Boxed Set. Blackmoor was part of Greyhawk for 3 or 4 years before it became part of the known world. There are also several continuity flaws between the DA modules and claims made in the GAZ series. [Many thanks to Steve Miller for this explanation - Ed.] DA1: Adventures in Blackmoor Setting: D&D Blackmoor Characters: ? of levels 10-14 DA2: Temple of the Frog Setting: D&D Blackmoor Characters: ? of levels 10-14 DA3: City of the Gods Setting: D&D Blackmoor Characters: ? of levels 10-14 DA4: Duchy of Ten Setting: D&D Blackmoor Characters: ? of levels 10-14 Solo: ---- Series overview: All of the modules in this section are for a single player, playing on his or her own. BSOLO is a basic level solo for a mage or elf. It takes place in the Ethengar Khanates, just over the border from Darokin, near the Streel river. The MSOLO modules were low level adventures which surfaced well before the Companion and Masters sets saw the light of day. They are based in Mystara (more or less retroactively as all older D&D adventures have been) and were the highlight your choices type of modules, which came with their own pen. XS2 is the second expert level solo modules. BSOLO: Ghost of Lion Castle Setting: D&D Basic Solo, Mystara Characters: 1 of levels ? MSOLO1: Blizzard Pass Setting: D&D Basic Solo, Mystara Characters: 1 thief of level 1-3 Written by: David Cook Year: 1983 MSOLO2: Maze of the Riddling Minotaur Setting: D&D Expert Solo, Mystara Characters: 1 of levels 1-10 Written by: Jeff Grubb Year: 1983 XSOLO: Lathan's Gold Setting: D&D Expert Solo, Mystara Characters: 1 of levels ? It is a sea-borne solo adventure.] XS2: Thunderdelve Mountain Setting: D&D Expert Solo, Mystara Characters: 1 of levels 4-6 Miscellaneous: ------------- Series overview: The O series features one-on-one gaming (one DM and one player). O1: Gem and the Staff Setting: D&D ??? Characters: 1 thief of level 8 O2: Blade of Vengeance Setting: D&D ??? Characters: 1 ? of level ? Series overview: XL1 provides stats for the characters from TSR's D&D action figure line ("Strongheart, Warduke and other characters by LJN Toys Ltd.") and is meant to be played with them. These characters also appeared on TSR's Marvel-animation TV show and referred to in X10 as the rulers of the Kingdom of Ierendi -- a nation that makes the greatest adventurers it's rulers. The adventure itself is an epic quest which takes place in Mystara [some informants disagree about this being in Mystara, I'd love confirmation from someone - Ed]. XL1: Quest for the Heartstone Setting: D&D, Mystara? Characters: 6-8 of level 5-10 Description: [This module includes 4 pages of illustrations and makes a good tournament game with the Lawful and Chaotic parties competing (they're well-balanced against each other and the Chaotics are really vile).] =========================================================================== Generic/Mixed AD&D Modules ========================== C series: -------- Series overview: Most of these were generic 1st edition AD&D modules, but C1 and C2 take place in Greyhawk. C1: Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Greyhawk Characters: ? of levels 5-7 Written by: Harold Johnson & Jeff Learson Year: ??? New spells: ??? New magical items: ??? Modules EX 1 and EX 2 are also loosely linked to Greyhawk. A series: -------- Series overview: Sections of this series were used in the AD&D Open at GenCon XIII, 1980. It is designed for 6-8 characters of 4th to 7th level (tournament characters are also provided). All of the modules provide the standard maps plus tournament maps and a tournament scoring system similar (but not identical for some reason) to the GenCon scoring system. The modules all include additional encounters, rooms, etc. which were not part of the tournament. This helps to make them more freeform and less linear than the tournament itself. Overall, a fairly solid series. It doesn't have the almost supernatural attraction that the D-series holds but it is very good nonetheless. A1: Slave Pits of the Undercity Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Greyhawk Characters: 6-8 of levels 4-7 Written by: David Cook Year: 1980 New spells: None New magical items: None New creatures: Aspis (MMII 10, MoM 204), Sundew (MMII 116, MoM 293) Description: For several years, organized bands of pirates and slavers have made a living by raiding the coastal towns on the Sea of Gearnat (the Greyhawk tie-in). This module details a ruined temple compound which the slavers are using as a base for some of their operations. It has some interesting tricks and traps as characters wend their way through above-ground and underground encounters on their mission to free the slaves and destroy the slavers. Contributed by: Scott Butler A2: Secret of the Slavers Stockade Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Greyhawk Characters: 6-8 of levels 4-7 Written by: Harold Johnson with Tom Moldvay Year: 1981 New spells: None New magical items: None New creatures: Boggle (MMII 20), Cloaker (MMII 25, MoM 44), Haunt (MMII 74, MoM 186), Phantom (MMII 100, MoM 287) Description: Having discovered a map in the Slave Pits of the Undercity, characters are led to an old stockade in the Drachensgrab Hills which only masquerades as a way station for travellers. It is another base where the slavers process newly acquired slaves. Among the usual encounter descriptions, the module details the defense plans of the fort fairly well, making stealth a must. Includes an interesting use for a ring of fire resistance and some crazy but harmless encounters. Contributed by: Scott Butler A3: Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Greyhawk Characters: 6-8 of levels 4-7 Written by: Allen Hammack Year: 1981 New spells: None New magical items: None New creatures: Storoper (MMII 115, MoM 304) Description: Hot on the trail of the fleeing slavers, characters wend their way further into the Drachensgrab Hills to the isle of the Slave Lords. There they tackle the defenses of the slaver's undermountain cavern and journey into their city to meet the Slave Lords themselves. Not used in the tournament but included anyways is a city map, although the city requires a fair bit of extra detailing to make it useful. No slaves in this one, the adventurers are out for blood. Contributed by: Scott Butler A4: In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Greyhawk Characters: 6-8 of levels 4-7 Written by: Lawrence Schick Year: 1981 New spells: None New magical items: None New creatures: Cave Fisher (MMII 24, MoM 40), Magman (MMII 82), Myconid (MMII 94, MoM 264), Sandling (MMII 106, MoM 102) Description: Taken prisoner at the end of the previous module, characters waken in the dungeons of the Slave Lords and must escape before the entire island is split apart by earthquakes and consumed in volcanic lava. This one is really interesting because characters find themselves stripped of their belongings, their spells and generally totally defenseless (unless you're a monk). They must really use their wits and the tools at hand to get out alive and in a limited period of time. Also included is a final encounter with the Slave Lords; a chance for the characters to get even. Contributed by: Scott Butler A1-4: Scourge of the Slave Lords Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Greyhawk Characters: 6-8 of levels 4-7 Year: ??? Description: This module is a collection of the previous four modules.
