Y-wing Attack Starfighters
This page is devoted entirely to the Y-wing, one of the most underrated
ships in the Star Wars galaxy. Although it is an older model, it can
operate almost as well as the versatile X-wing. In most computer games
the Y-wing is made inferior to other ships as to make a more challenging
game. Don't let this fool you though; in the movies it is clear that
Y-wings compare very closely to the X-wings speed and maneuverability.
The Y-wing is a multipurpose vessel which can be used as a light
bomber. It can be utilized in almost any mission, making it a superb
investment for the Rebel Alliance. Often, these ships are demoted from
assaults on Imperial convoys only to be refitted for a heavy bombing
attack on an Imperial base a few days later. Y-wings are commonly used
as diplomatic escorts, while the BTL-A4 Y-wing Longprobe has extra
provisions and more powerful sensors for long range patrol duty.
Before the X-wing was introduced, Y-wings were the flagship fighters of
the Rebel Alliance playing a vital role in the Battle of Vnas at Duro and
the First Battle of Ord Biniir. The Y-wings saved a great many of lives
by blockading Imperial TIE bombers during the siege of Ank Ki'Shor. Two
Y-wing squadrons were deployed at the Battle of Yavin. At the Battle of
Endor, a few Y-wings were used but only one survived, falling behind the
modern TIE interceptors and X-wings. Outnumbering any other craft in the
Rebellion's fleet, Y-wings became the most commonly used fighter. As the
Alliance aquires more X-wings and B-wings though, Y-wings become more
obsolete and are used for jobs of the second most importance.
The crew is one pilot on the BTL-A4 Longprobe and a weapons officer aids
the pilot in the BTL-S3. It is 16 meters long and its top sublight speed
is 80 MGLT.
The Y-wing has three important sections:
The forward main fuselage houses the weapons systems and the pilot's
station.
A reinforced central spar extends from the back of the cockpit and
contains a Novaldex power generator and the Koensayr R300-H hyperdrive
unit.
A cross wing holds the Thiodyne O3-R cryogenic power cells, and two
large Koensayr R200 ion jet sublight drives on the extreme ends. Placed
ahead of the engines are Twin Fabritech ANx-y long range sensor arrays
which feed data to the primary sensor array and targeting computer
located between the laser cannons in the bow of the ship.
It would be bad luck for an enemy to meet a Y-wing in close-quarters
combat because of their durability and firepower. Controlled by the
pilot are the two Taim & Bak IX4 laser cannons and twin Arakyd Flex Tube
proton-torpedo launchers which house eight torpedoes each. On the
BTL-S3, the more common Y-wing conficuration, an ArMek SW-4 ion cannon
sits directly behind the pilot and is usually manned by a weapons
officer. The BTL-A4 does not have a gunner, so the ion cannon is fixed
directly fore or aft; the aft position is good to stop persuing
spacecraft. The ion cannons are one of the most useful aspects of the
Y-wing, allowing squadrons to attack, disable, and capture enemy vessels
and equipment for use in the Alliance's fleet.
An R2 or R4 astromech droid is fit into the droid socket on the central
spar and it manages all flight, navigation, and power systems. It may
also handel fire control, perform in-flight maintenance, reroute power as
needed, and store hyperspace jump coordinates.
Often, a lone Y-wing squadron will be designated as "Gold Squadron"
because of the gold markings on the forward main fuselage.
