I don't know. I am not sure I followed your idea DP>completely. I would like to hear about the project if you get it rolling DP>though. BTW don't put a bolt thru the tree. Secure it arround the tree. The basic idea is that trees oscillate in the wind and this oscillatory motion can be harnessed. By using three or more cables, you can assure that what ever direction the tree moves, it is away from one or more of your ground-based pulleys, providing tension in the corresponding cables. Once you have intermittent tension in a cable, there are many ways to make that tension work for you. My ASCII art capabilities are not up to the wonders I've seen on the Internet, but I'll try to draw you a picture. The "O" is the collar mounted about 2/3 the way up a large tree. There are three cables running from the collar to pulleys (the "+"s) firmly attached to the ground. From these pulleys, the cables take separate routes to a common transmission. Each cable is attached with an individual spring & ratchet reel ("="). Tension on any one of these cables will cause that cable to unwind and turn the axle ("|"). When this tension is released, a spring rewinds the cable without turning the axle. Since any motion of the tree which produces slack in one cable will produce tension in another, the axle will always be in motion, albeit unsteady. Now that we have a turning axle, we can put most anything we want at "X" to use the energy so harnessed. +-----+. \ `. \ `. \ `+----= O------+----= / .+----= / .' | / .' Almost all you see in marine supply stores is either plastic coated steel wire rope or stainless wire rope. You will want to check with a logging or rigging or wire rope store. Possibly whoever sells farm equipment in your area can find some for you. Wire-rope lube should be available from the same source.
