Get a good portable atlas, like Rand Mcnally. Include a good rangefinder compass and learn how to use it before you have to. It is also a good idea to KNOW several bolt holes and how to get to them beforehand. Ideally have one you can reach on foot, one with a car, and one where you can get lost and no-one can find you. If you can cache material there before hand, do so. I have mine. I am lucky that I live next to a large city owned park. It includes a substantial mountain range. I am also 1 hour away by car from a wilderness area that is ideal. Give me two hours and I will be in an area the size of Vermont that Allah himself couldn't find a regiment.
