To accomplish this mission, NCAT has three main program areas -- sustainable energy, resource-efficient housing, and sustainable agriculture. NATAS provides free e-mail (anywhere) and toll-free telephone (U.S. only) access to a wealth of experts and resources on a variety of subjects. It is *not* intended to discuss either AE appropriateness or comparisons with conventional energy sources such as fossil or nuclear fuels. Those "discussions" are best relegated to the appropriate usenet newsgroup. An alternative energy source is taken to include solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, electro-chemical, hydro-electric, or any renewable and sustainable energy source. It is also assumed to exclude fuels such as fossil and nuclear since these literally take an act of God to create. To subscribe to the AE mailing list, e-mail the command: subscribe ae to the Internet address: listserv@sjsuvm1.sjsu.edu or the bitnet address: listserv@sjsuvm1 After subscribing, you may enable the digest feature by sending "set ae digest" to the listserver. After subscribing, messages may be sent to the list by sending to: ae@sjsuvm1 (bitnet) or ae@sjsuvm1.sjsu.edu (InterNet). The owner of this list is Clyde R. Visser, KD6GWN *** 4.2 *** ELECTRIC VEHICLES The EV Electric Vehicle Discussion Mailing List is intended to provide a forum to discuss the current state of the art and future direction of electric vehicles. It is *not* intended to discuss either EV appropriateness or comparisons with other transportation primary drive modes such as the venerable internal combustion engine. Those "discussions" are best relegated to the appropriate usenet newsgroup. The EV mailing list currently has over 400 subscribers. An electric vehicle is any vehicle which uses an electric motor as the primary or sole motive force. The energy storage device used to drive said motor can use any technology including, but not limited to, solar electric, electric battery, fuel cell, internal combustion engine coupled with a electric generator (hybrids), or any combination of these. Production electric vehicles are currently available. Internal combustion engine vehicles can be converted to electric. There exist a number of companies who perform this conversion. There is also a number of manufacturers of equipment allowing you to do-it-yourself. To subscribe to the EV mailing list, e-mail the command: subscribe ev to the Internet address: listserv@sjsuvm1.sjsu.edu or the bitnet address: listserv@sjsuvm1 After subscribing, you may enable the digest feature by sending "set ev digest" to the listserver. After subscribing, messages may be sent to the list by sending to: ev@sjsuvm1 (bitnet) or ev@sjsuvm1.sjsu.edu (InterNet). The owner of this list is Clyde R. ECIX was supported for two years by the Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation and the Energy Foundation, however, those funds ran out in March of 1993. The file distribution service is being continued on a volunteer basis by Lelani Arris (ecixfiles@igc.apc.org or larris@igc.apc.org). ECIX has a number of energy- and climate-related files from a variety of sources, although some are getting out of date because the service is being maintained only by a single volunteer. It was created to provide information services to utility representatives and energy professionals in the commercial and industrial sectors in the Pacific Northwest, but is now expanding to serve other areas of the United States as well. The EICBBS provides a mechanism for fast and easy information transfer and serves as a central repository of information on all types of energy efficiency in the commercial and industrial sectors. EICBBS includes discussion forums on renewable energy, sustainable building practices, environmental issues, and electric vehicles, as well as a training calendar, programs database, and jobs/resume listing service. Toll-free telephone access is provided for the western United States, and Internet access is allowed from anywhere in the world 24 hours a day. EICBBS exchanges e-mail and conference messages with the Energy Regulatory BBS (in Michigan, USA) on a daily basis, and other gateways will be operational in the near future. CREST focuses on renewable energy, energy efficiency, the environment, and sustainable development. One of CREST's primary functions is to explore and demonstrate the use of advanced information and communication technologies in these fields. CREST was created by the Solar Energy Research and Education Foundation, a Washington-based, tax-exempt non-profit organization. CREST also works closely with, and is secretariat of, the TerraMedia Collaborative, an international coalition of institutions dedicated to producing interactive multimedia applications for training and education in the fields of energy and the environment. CREST has been established to demonstrate renewable energy and energy efficiency technology at work today and to encourage its use through hands-on interaction and education. CREST will target several audiences including government decision makers, utilities, educators, students, non- governmental organizations, architects, engineers, and librarians. CREST takes a three-faceted approach to achieving its mission: * On-Site: The Center itself along with affiliated facilities * On-Line: Internet-based and other on-line services * On-Disc: CD-ROM education and training modules reached in the most effective and cost-efficient manner CREST's unique role is to catalyze, monitor, enhance, and publicize the efforts of other institutions in the fields of focus. CREST is in Washington because of the importance of educating decision makers who have a critical role in energy, environment, and development policymaking.
