Yes! The beginning has finally arrived! Now for the other platforms: do you think MiNGeYe is portable to other platforms? It would save us a lot of time and effort if it were. I'm very interested in having a look at the source (if it was written in plain old c, I'm not familiar with C++ or other languages). In any case, if the core engine (PNG/MGN decoder) is platform independent we could get things going pretty fast. So how about making the source available? I'm a total Delphi-guy, so the PNG/MNG encoder/decoder is in Delphi's object pascal. I'm willing to make the source available, but I also must admit it's not as clean and heavily commented as it should be. But we'd still need to find a maniac to translate it to C or C++ though, to make it portable... (Any volunteers out there?) Btw. the zlib and jpeg routines are based on existing C sources, so that's no problem. Just a little remark: PAST chunk, orientation=8 The lines bbbbb should probably be ppppp. -------- If I interpret correctly, if an author wants to use a smaller image tiled onto the background, he must first define an image the size of the background to paint, then PAST the smaller image into it using the tiling option in 'orientation', and then reference the defined background image in a BACK chunk.... This sounds like a lot of work. Why not add a tiling/orientation byte to the BACK chunk. Saves the author some work, and a decoder may display this much quicker as it can paint directly onto the output (under normal circumstances), not needing to composite the background in memory first. No need to remove this option from the PAST chunk however. Agreed, there would be a memory savings, and that argument is more persuasive. I don't think there would actually be that much of a burden on the decoders, because they ought to be able to reuse the PAST code. The main problem is that it makes the spec *look* more complex. Maybe, since the PAST chunk appears earlier in the spec, we can simply refer back to PAST for the description of the tiling options. I'll draft that up and see how it looks. To help conserve the amount of complexity, I'll remove tiling options 10, 12, and 14 from both PAST and BACK. It's easy to achieve those effects with the existing PAST chunk anyway (build up a single complex tile, then tile with that), and I expect they'd be used relatively infrequently. If you want to go ahead and code it up in MiNGeYe, it's the 10th byte of BACK; 0: no tiling, 1:tile in the same manner as PAST with orientation=8; no tiling if omitted. We don't really want to have a lot of PNJ (or JNG) files floating around the 'net and adding to "format soup", but it's handy to have a pronounceable name to call this MNG sub-format, and it's handy to be able to make temporary standalone files for use in creating or disassembling MNG files. I'll add a statement in the "Internet media type" section that we have no plans to request a MIME type for PNJ/JNG. If you're writing code, just recognize both for now. I was waiting to hear if anyone else cared. 3-person consensus seems to favor JNG. I made a cursory net search to see if either conflicts with existing extensions and didn't find any. Glenn -- Send the message body "help" to mpng-list-request@dworkin.wustl.edu
