A squirrel's diet consists mainly of berries and nuts. However, it can sometimes also include insects, bird eggs and young birds. Some squirrels even enjoy a piece of bread once in awhile although it certainly can't be found in the wild.





When born, a squirrel is only about an inch in length and one ounce in weight. It is completely hairless, blind and deaf.





An adult squirrel requires about one pound of food per week to stay healthy.





Although hunted by larger birds such as hawks, squirrels will sometimes chase off a much larger crow when competing for food.





The Eastern Grey Squirrel has a beautiful tail which serves a variety of purposes. It is often used as a signal to communicate with other squirrels. It also provides warmth and acts as a rudder when jumping.





Squirrels are great acrobats. If you watch closely, you can see squirrels jumping from one tree to the next, often hanging on only a little twig.





An adult Eastern Grey Squirrel weighs about 1 to 1-1/2 pounds.





The largest concentration of squirrels in the U.S. is in Washington, D.C.





Squirrels are highly clever animals. Any bird lover will tell you the same. Squirrels are very adept at stealing food from feeders designed for flying creatures.
